Italian rescue teams recue man stuck under collapses of medieval tower
Authorities described the man’s condition as “serious” but noted that he was conscious when firefighters extricated him using a telescopic aerial ladder and transferred him to an ambulance on a stretcher.
Rome Prefect Lamberto Giannini explained that the operation took considerable time because falling debris from subsequent collapses repeatedly covered the trapped worker.
Three other individuals working at the Torrei dei Conti were also rescued safely by firefighters, who had rushed to the scene early Monday with multiple emergency teams and mobile ladder trucks.
Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli commended the rescue as “exemplary.” Earlier in the day, one other worker had been hospitalized in serious but stable condition, while two additional people sustained minor injuries.
Police cordoned off the area around Rome’s Via dei Fori Imperiali, which had been crowded with tourists and onlookers.
The first major collapse occurred around 11:30 a.m. local time, followed by a second around 1:00 p.m. as rescue operations were underway. Some rescuers were present during the second collapse, temporarily halting the use of mobile ladders, though firefighters confirmed that the rescue team remained unharmed.
Officials confirmed that one of the workers had been trapped but was able to communicate with rescuers throughout the ordeal.
